Whether future proofing your home, or making your day to day activities easier, get the help you need to live an independent life.
If you are disabled, you may be eligible for a DFG which is provided by your local council.
This grant can be used to pay for some or all of the necessary adaptations to enable you to stay in your home and improve your day to day activities.
Examples of what the grant can be used for:
Improve access to rooms and facilities, e.g. through-floor lift/stairlift
Widen doors and install ramps
Installation of a downstairs bathroom
Provide a heating system suitable for your needs
Adapt heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use
You can apply directly to your local council (see the DFG website) or be referred by a Social Worker or Occupational Therapist.
Things to note:
A DFG is available in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland (in Scotland it's known as an Equipment and Adaptations Grant).
A DFG is means-tested, but will not affect any other benefits you receive.
Disabled children under 18 can get a grant without their parents' income being taken into account.
Both homeowners and tenants can get a DFG, but tenants must have the landlord's permission and intend to stay at the property for at least five years.
If you are a person with a disability, have a long-term illness, or are over the age of 60, you may be entitled to a reduction on the rate of VAT you pay on products designed or adapted for your own personal or domestic use.
There are two types of VAT reduction that you should know about:
0% VAT: For individuals suffering from chronic illness or disability. This reduction will cover domestic and personal use
5% VAT Relief: If the person applying is over 60, but is not eligible for 0% VAT, they may get a reduced rate of 5% VAT for certain home adaptations such as Stairlift installations
For more information on this type of VAT relief and to see if you comply, you can read more on the VAT Notice 701/7 website. You can also contact your council or speak to us at Wessex. Our accounts and sales teams have a good understanding of the DFG, having worked with these systems for many years! You can call on 01794 830303 or email sales@wessexlifts.co.uk.
