The team at Wessex are so excited to be working with Sophie and following her journey over the next twelve months.
Sophie is truly inspirational. In 2010, at the age of just 16, Sophie was involved in a near fatal car accident which left her with a permanent and life changing spinal cord injury. Sophie dusted herself off, joined her local wheelchair basketball team and decided that the accident was not going to dictate her life.
"Growing up I always wanted to compete at the Olympics," said Sophie. "I always watched them and wondered what sport I could get really good at that would give me that chance. As an abled bodied athlete, I wasn't going to be able to compete... but I guess the silver lining is that despite now having a disability, I have the opportunity to represent my country on an international stage. The Rio Paralympics in 2016 was one of the best experiences of my life. We came fourth, which was quite bittersweet, but it has just made me even more hungry for a Paralympic Medal."
Sophie is as passionate about accessibility for all as we are. Here at Wessex, we care about people and making things easier. We have a wide range of products giving quality, value and reliability, allowing people like Sophie to access the world around them, giving them independence and freedom to enjoy life.
We have been supporting Sophie for many years. After her accident, Sophie had a Wessex Through-Floor Lift installed in her family home.
"Having a Wessex lift gave me the freedom to move around my home after my accident. I loved being able to get back upstairs to my bedroom, it made everything just feel like it was back to normal. I am so excited to have the new one installed in December 2020. It's so much more modern and has allowed me to move into an amazing house with my boyfriend Josh. I am so looking forward to our future together."
We will be showcasing Sophie's journey throughout the next twelve months from the installation of her new Elesse Home Lift to the Paralympics in 2021.
